Blog entries about the wild and wacky school situation

I've been blogging quite a bit about the ongoing debates and mud-slinging surrounding the NOLA schools.... so much so that I have given up trying to update here.

There's a small search box in the top left corner of my blog page. You can search on "schools", or "charter", or "voucher" - or combinations thereof. Lots of the entries are cross-linked, and the most recent update I wrote was yesterday (Nov 9).

(oops - I wrote again about it (and other things). Sorry bout that...
Algiers! Are You Ready?

Or you can use this link to find all "Polimom Says..." blog entries containing the words "algiers schools".

Any Info on Holy Name of Mary School

Does anyone have any infor on Holy Name of Mary? I've tried calling the school and just get an old recording. I've also called the church and Fr. John indicates that masses have started up (this past Saturday and Sunday). Apparently, they're using the school cafeteria as a chapel since there is no AC in the church. I've left a message for Fr. John but I'm sure he's busy with many other things.
According to my father who has been in the neighborhood, the school sustained little damage and it has been repaired. Our house also is fine with water and electricity so we'd like to come home soon. Just need schooling for our 6 year old.

Anyway, if anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone is doing any homeschooling in the point that might work for us too. My wife has a degree in early childhood education and she's willing to do some at home instruction.

Thanks for any help.

Algiers Schools OPening?

I have received several emails saying that the Algiers schools will be opening this year. Does anyone have any evidence to back this up? Or has anyone heard the same info? I am an Algiers teacher and I do not want to take a position somewhere else if I am going to be return to my home school. Thanks for sharing any info you might have! The Louisianaschools.net and the alvarezmarsal sites do not offer any info other than to say to find a job elsewhere.

Home School.... group effort

Suggestion: We have enough Teachers in Algiers to handle returning Algiers students if someone starts a group home-schooling project!!! I think that such an effort could be very successful since OPPS does not seem to be able to organize a local effort. they should surrender control, not that they have had much, in view of the current crisis.

Article from Nola.com about Schools (Mostly Jeff. Parish)

This article is interesting, in part because it says Orleans is going to announce plans, but also because it says Jeff. Parish may enroll kids from other areas.

Updated Archdiocese school information 9/13

I see nothing about Algiers or New Orleans in this release. However, Jefferson Parish schools to open 10/03

SCHOOLS: Catholic Schools Superintendent Father William Maestri briefed an overflow crowd of parents Tuesday, Sept.13, at the Catholic Life Center Auditorium to on plans for six satellite elementary schools and one satellite secondary school in the Baton Rouge Diocese. Father Maestri said he expects Jefferson Parish Catholic schools to resume operations by Oct. 3, although the timetable may not be exact. He asked those parents with children in either elementary or secondary schools in Jefferson Parish not to register their children in Baton Rouge-area Catholic schools because they will be able to return to their original schools and complete a full academic year by going on an extended schedule. Father Maestri said parents whose children attended schools that were heavily damaged needed to have preference for the available slots. St. Tammany Parish’s three Catholic high schools – St. Scholastica Academy, St. Paul’s and Pope John Paul II – are set to reopen on Sept.19. St. Margaret Mary Elementary School in Slidell will be expanding enrollment to help those from heavily damaged schools such as Our Lady of Lourdes, Slidell. As of Wednesday, Sept. 14, all schools in St. John and St. Charles civil parishes will be open. After the briefing, parents filled out forms indicating their willingness to register at Baton Rouge Catholic elementary and secondary schools, and Father Maestri said that would help quantify the need. St. Michael’s High School will offer coed evening sessions for 1,000 students. If more high school slots are needed, other discussions will take place to find additional space.
