I'm going back to help rescue pets

Hi,

My name is Aimee Rust, and I live in the Point at 416 Eliza (it's the big gray house with the rosebushes). From what I understand, time is running out for pets left behind, so I'm going back tomorrow (9/13) to do what I can to help.

I've heard that the Nat'l Guard is preventing people from entering others' houses to rescue animals, so I'd rather not "break in" to save your pet, but if you've left a hidden key or something and you want me to check on/feed your animals, let me know ASAP at this site or at pdreadfull@yahoo.com. Again, I'd rather not be arrested for this, but I will do whatever else I can to save your animals.

Also, if you're in touch with people already in the Point who have been working to save animals, I am willing and able to assist their efforts. I will be bringing as much cat and dog food as my jeep can hold, and I already have a live trap and leashes back at my house. I do need some information: it would be best to evacuate these animals, but we will need places to shelter them once we get them out. Any ideas/advice?

Please let me know what I can do to help. The thought of those starving animals breaks my heart, and by the time the authorities get their asses in gear it will be too late.

Aimee Rust

Animal Shelter on west bank wants to house animal rescue workers, and stay open

Hello Polimom and/or Kathryn,

This was forwarded to me and I'm not sure what else to do to get the word out. It is information on an animal shelter on the west bank that wants to house animal rescue workers, and to stay open.
______________________________________________________________________
-I received a desperate call today from Dawnette Sartin, she runs the River Road Animal Rescue at English Turn. 504.952.9213
10001 River Road (on some maps the street is known as Patterson) 2 miles past English Turn Country Club 10 minutes from Downtown on the West Bank.

She has a 10,000 square ft plantation home that has survived, she does need 1 tarp to go over part of the roof, otherwise if they get a rain storm the roof and walls will melt away and the tarp can protect this from happening. She has 9 bedrooms and would welcome emergency workers/animal rescue workers at her home. They have had running water and everyone on the street has been able to cook all week. They are under the jurisdiction of Mayor Roy Nagin and may be forced to evacuate tomorrow and they don’t want to go, because they are across the river and not in a toxic area and want to help. The land phone lines are going on. The will have the utilities on tomorrow, and her home is the hub for the street. Hers is the largest house on the West Bank and so the utilities will go on first at her home.

Her dilemma is that they are an animal rescue facility and they 37 animals and some very old dogs. They do not want to evacuate because they will not be allowed to evacuate the animals. If she has to evacuate she would like to board the animals at a vet and she can pay for vet services.

Pets

Kathryn and Vinnie, I just wanted to say that you are doing a great job in taking care and rescuing all the innocent pets left behind. I am a pet owner but I have mine with me and just reading the pet postings it really breaks my heart. Great job and keep our animals safe.

Cats & Snake on Olivier

We have 2 cats and a python (python is in an aquarium) in a house on the 400 block of Olivier St. We were out of town on vacation when the storm came in, and were unable to evacuate them. :(

Our roommate is NOPD, but is without a personal vehicle at the moment and has only been able to check on them once since the storm, and at that time, left out a lot of food and water for them.

He hopes to be able to get them out sometime this week, but if that can't happen, we may need additional assistance.

Cats Left Behind

My mother & father in law are with us here in Georgia. They live off Woodland Hwy. in the 200 block of Neil Ave. Does anyone know if trustworthy people are available to go to that area to check on these pets? Their 2 cats were left last Sunday the day before the storm. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. My mother in law was able to get through to Rep.Jeff Arnold, who was in BAton Rouge,on the phone today. He said he could not give any info as to when people of Algiers would be let back in.

Pets on the Point

Vinnie and others are continuing to find, feed, and water pets. Lots of folks contacted them directly, so I don't have all of the information for this post. I'll separately comment on each pet / request he told me about, and you can respond directly to it.
If you have pets on the Point only that are not in this list, and you haven't heard somehow that they are okay, contact us via email or call Vinnie directly at 362-4695.
