Algiers/French Quarter sites will accept hazardous household waste this weekend

Algiers residents can drop off household hazardous materials Saturday and Sunday at the old incinerator on Hendee, near the intersection of Gen. DeGaulle Drive and U.S. 90.

Under an effort coordinated by the state Department of Environmental Quality, local officials and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. both days.

Algiers residents will be asked to show identification.

Items that will not be accepted include animal manure or carcasses, human waste or other biological items, needles, or spoiled food.

Two sites will also be set up today and Saturday in the French Quarter for the same type waste.

The French Quarter sites will be at North Rampart and Esplanade and at Royal and St. Phillip. The sites will be open until 4 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday.
