Original Press Release

(New Orleans, LA) In the Algiers area, once-a-week scheduled trash pick-up will resume the week of Monday, October 24, 2005. Residents must limit curbside trash to no more than two 32-gallon trash containers (or the equivalent of eight trash bags) per week.

As household garbage pick-up resumes, crews will continue removing debris from public roads and rights of way. Trucks will make several passes through neighborhoods. Homeowners are asked to segregate their debris into the categories listed below and place it in the public right of way for quicker removal.

* Vegetation and woody debris
* Construction debris (building materials like drywall and lumber, carpeting, furniture, etc.)
* Household hazardous wastes (oils, batteries, pesticides, paints – what you would typically find in your garage)
* White goods (refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, computers, and electronics). Refrigerator and freezer doors should be secured with duct tape.
* Household garbage, which must be segregated from hurricane debris.

The Army Corps of Engineers opened a “Debris Clean-up” line at the request of the City; residents may call (800) 849-1355 for information, to determine which day they will have garbage pickup in Algiers, or to give Corps contractors right-of-way to access their property to pick up debris, household waste, garbage and white goods.
