Saints. Sunday. Be there.

Okay.  So it’s no secret that I’m a rabid New Orleans Saints fan.  Have been for decades;  even went through the “Ain’ts” stage, complete with bag on head.
This year, though, is altogether different.  They’re playing Sunday against Minnesota for a chance at all the marbles.  The winner goes to the Superbowl.

Yes, the Superbowl.  The Saints.  […]

Nagin sets up the next disaster

So… the evacuation in front of Gustav went extremely well. Preparations were made for security, information seemed to be more comprehensive, and for the most part, people listened. That’s a good thing, because hurricanes, as everybody knows, are extremely unpredictable. Furthermore, the repairs to the levees are neither complete, nor […]

Power problems in New Orleans

Looks like Algiers Point is one of the very few places that has power in NOLA — and I’m told that it’s somewhat spotty.
In fact, according to this post at GulfSails, New Orleans is off the grid altogether. And might be for quite a while.
What a mess. Dodge the bullet, and end up […]

Conditions on the Point

I can hardly tell you how much fun it was to talk to Algiers Point just now. Couldn’t be a bigger contrast to the situation in 2005.
I’m told that there’s power for the most part, though one or two streets may not yet have it. (Parts of Pelican St. never lost power at […]

Power up on the Point!

I’m on the phone right now with Algiers Point. Power had been out for most of the day, but as we were speaking, the lights came on!
It’s pretty hard to know whether that will hold, but FWIW, he got the AC running and everything, so things are looking UP there.
James thinks he may […]

West Bank — so far, looking good

LOTS of folks googling in for information on Algiers.
Near as I can tell, the West Bank is experiencing pretty minor damage (relatively), and it’s all due to wind. Tree limbs, etc. I’ve heard nothing at all about flooding.
So far so good.

Good news, bad news (update on the bad news)

Actually, it’s mostly good news thus far. Gustav’s downgraded to a Cat 2, and things are holding together well in his face. Furthermore, storm surge is lower than originally expected, though it will be quite a few hours before that’s off the worry-charts.
There are a couple of reports on NOLA.com, though, about the […]

It begins

Power’s out this morning, in various parts of New Orleans and in front of the hurricane, and the lower coast is probably feeling the heat big time about now. Will Gustav track a tad east or west? Nobody knows, but any shift could have an enormous effect.
There’s a lot being said about the […]
