Surge model

A fascinating animation (link removed) graphic of how the surge from Hurricane Gustav may go, from the NOAA (via Twitter).

The waiting…

Pretty quiet, they’re saying, all along the coast tonight. Nearly 2 million people evacuated (incredible!). And now it’s the big wait…
I can’t help thinking, though, that this looks a lot different from three years ago. I sure hope so.
This entire exercise — another hurricane roaring into Louisiana… me watching from my safe […]

Ever-better for NOLA

The SciGuy has updated his New Orleans post to reflect the latest info. I’m definitely starting to feel a bit better about the city’s outlook.
Of course, the westerly turn Gustav’s taking means other areas are coming back into the cone. Like mine (though not yet).
Luckily, I have a post almost ready to go, […]

Okay — I can breathe now…

Thanks to some friends from Algiers Point who’ve emailed, I’ve managed to run down “my” people finally.
They’re good.
Everybody’s out who could go, and safely located outside the major danger areas. Those who couldn’t get out, of course, will be busily keeping the streets and water safe in the coming days.
Phew!
I really was starting […]

Gustav analysis: Some optimism for New Orleans

The Chronicle’s SciGuy, Eric Berger, has spent the last several days monitoring Gustav, posting and updating, and even holding live chats.
Now that it’s clear that Houston’s not going to be in the line of fire, though, he’s turned his formidable knowledge toward New Orleans, and what Gustav’s impact, under current circumstances (less than a day […]

Tense

I’m tense.  The track of this storm is just so very bad, and the only ray of hope I’m seeing just now for NOLA is that Gustav dropped to a Cat 3 in the night, and may hit land now as a Cat 4 or weaker.
I can’t find any of “my” people, and I’m supposed […]

Three years later — a NOLA shout out

This is just a shout-out to those folks from New Orleans who still read Polimom, all these (not so many) years later.
As I write, the projections suggest that the surge this time could potentially be the worst case scenario for NOLA. Eric Berger (my absolute GoToGuy for hurricanes) has a truly scary post up […]

Gustav

Had to take Adorable Child (AC) to a doctor’s appointment today. Her doctor mentioned that she’d been seeing people all morning who “had to get in today” because they were “evacuating”.
AC confirmed that many of the kids she knows are leaving town early, so they can be safely away before Gustav comes.
Please. […]

Dirty Drainage Ditches

If you live anywhere in the Houston area, this story should bother you:
Fecal pathogens are thriving in the regional waterways. Buffalo and White Oak bayous have bacterial counts that rank among the highest in Texas. […]
Whitworth said the city of Houston has done better recently upgrading sewage treatment plants, spending $1 billion since the […]

Let it go…

They were extraordinary times, extraordinary circumstances, and extraordinary people.
Now it’s time to let it go.

It’s over. Move on.
