Happy Halloween!

Posted on Friday 31 October 2008

I can’t believe Halloween’s upon us, and we never did get pumpkins carved this year.  Since I’ve failed so miserably, I’ll just go with a photo of last year’s:

Through the flaming curtain

Some random Halloween thoughts:

Did you know that pumpkins aren’t vegetables?  I always thought they were — how bizarre to learn that they’re a fruit!  (That just seems so wrong somehow.)

Also — apparently the Jack O’Lantern arrived with the Irish in North America.  Back in the Olde Country, they apparently carved faces into turnips (and other foodstuffs), in hopes of warding off “Stingy Jack”.  (Lucky for me they found pumpkins on this continent!  I’d probably take my thumb off if I tried to carve anything that small.)

Finally — does anybody remember the days when people made the treats they gave to the kiddies?  I really do miss fresh cookies and popcorn balls…

Have a great time tonight!  Stay safe!
