US Senate: Texas

Posted on Monday 13 October 2008

(On October 6 2008, I sent letters to each candidate running for US Congress in Harris and Fort Bend counties, asking them to publicly commit to fiscal responsibility via PAYGO.  I’m posting the replies (and lack thereof) by race / district, but I’ll also be writing about my general reaction to this civics experiment, and in some cases, for which candidate I would vote.)

Only one of Texas’ two US Senate seats is up for election this year.  Incumbent John Cornyn (R) did not respond to my repeated requests for a position.

Rick Noriega, Democrat

Yes, will support PAYGO

Yvonne Schick, Libertarian

No, will not support PAYGO

Further information:

Rick Noriega is challenging for this seat.  Here’s his complete email response:

Rick supports PAYGO and spoke about it in the Austin American Statesmen

His campaign also sent a comprehensive press release, which is available online, here.

Yvonne Schick is challenging for this seat.  Here’s her complete email response:

You have identified one of the root problems very clearly.  I am committed to reducing the size of the federal government back to its core functions, then we can balance a budget without taxing at high rates.

I like the Libertarian’s reply, which seems to boil down to “PAYGO doesn’t go nearly far enough to suit me.”

Enrico, I hear what you’re saying. But moving from the disastrous current irresponsibility to “reducing government back to its core functions”, as many big L Libertarians advocate, strikes me as hopelessly naive.

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of hopelessly idealogue-ical, rather than naive.
