Free music and bratwurst

Posted on Thursday 24 July 2008

After the massive turn-out in Portland Oregon for Obama, there were some right-leaning pundits who objected to the way the rally attendance was reported.

Unmentioned in national reporting was the fact that Obama was preceded by a rare, 45-minute free concert by actual rock stars The Decemberists.

Who?

So…. the implication was that over 70,000 souls braved what has to have been massive crowd and traffic problems because of this incredibly famous band, and they all just hung around afterward for awhile to hear some dude with a funny name give a speech? (Oh… and let’s not forget the political implications of the band itself, eh?)

*snort*

It was funny at the time, and it’s no less funny when applied to the crowd in Berlin today:

Well, it has been learned that before the presumptive Democrat nominee spoke to a crowd in Berlin Thursday, two popular German acts — reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn — entertained the gathering audience.

The same site is running with this free music angle, btw.

So once again, a huge “gathering audience” (estimated by Berlin police at over 200,000) turned out because of the free music? How do these brain-children know it wasn’t the bratwurst that lured all those Berliners?

Maybe they were there to see if, like JFK before him, Sen. Obama was going to declare that he was a donut.
