Happy 4th of July!

Posted on Friday 4 July 2008

We didn’t go to the local fireworks display last year. Instead, we, along with a couple of neighbors, bought the street variety to enjoy amongst ourselves.

They weren’t nearly as elaborate as the city’s annual display, but we liked it.

Street Fireworks

Speaking of the city — Katy nearly had to cancel this year’s aerial show. It’s privately funded, and very little $ had come in. When word of the cancellation leaked out, though, a local business stepped in with a large donation, enabling the festivities to go on.

Which turns out to be a very good thing, since the City of Houston has evidently slithered an annexation tentacle all the way out here to Katy, and been ticketing people.

Turns out that you can buy them legally, and likewise set them off (also legally) in unincorporated areas. But if your route from the fireworks stand (in Katy) to your home (in Katy) takes you through a part of Houston (which you might not be expecting if you’re miles outside of Houston), you’re subject to penalties / fines.

Since Houston has bizarrely laid claim to a short section of a major Katy thoroughfare (gotta love those MUDs), last year’s plan looks pretty risky to me. (Off-topic, but from the link: when’s the last time you heard the word “scofflaw”? LOL!)

So we’ll be out there with the crowds tonight at Katy Mills, oohing and ahhing (and of course I’ll have the camera!!). Can’t wait!

Have a happy Fourth of July, everyone!
