Mammoth Cave in KY would be a great trip for photos -- I've been to a couple of similar parks in WV, and they're absolutely beautiful. If there are a few other places to visit nearby, it could be a lot of fun!

Interesting suggestion about the train. I looked it up (<a href="http://www.surf-mexico.com/states/Chihuahua/chepe.htm" rel="nofollow">link</a>), and I'm going to bookmark that for the future. Dunno about this time around, but very cool idea...

Here are a few suggestions:

Mexico: Semana Santa is coming up - if you could plan something pretty quick, most cities and towns have some interesting processions / festivities.

Maybe check out the Chihuahua al Pacifico train? Start in Chihuahua (continental flies there), take the economical train to Creel, spend a couple of days exploring Copper Canyon, then either take the train on to Los Mochis, or back to Chihuahua.

The bayous sound interesting - you might be interested in <em> Bayou Farewell </em> by Mike Tidwell to get some ideas of places to visit.

I'd agree with many of the suggestions (love roaming around the bayous and swamps in pirogues and air boats, were I only a photographer!). I find Arizona and Colorado terribly beautiful for scenery, because they're so different from home.

Hmmm.... some good ideas here. I'll have to give my cousins a link to this thread.

One thought I had was a trip into the Louisiana Bayou area. If I could, I'd try to find a guide and spend a full day in the Atchafalaya, but I don't know anyone.

If you can hit Cherry Blossom time in DC, it's pretty spectacular. I was amazed the first time I saw it there. Timing is tough, though.

Well, it depends on what I am looking to shoot, and the time of year. Right now, one destination in the USofA would be Dallas - the tulips at the Arboretum should be in bloom shortly. OTOH, if I want "natural scenics", I would head for the closest airport to Grand Teton NP (probably Salt Lake City) - you can also see Yellowstone (in addition to SLC itself.) If you want some socio-documentary photography, then head to the Big Easy - I am certain there is quite a story still to be told there.

Or, you could do a driving tour of some of the Civil War battlegrounds - fly to DC/BMI, thne drive to Gettysburg/Antietam/all sorts of places.

John -- we talked about Mexico as a maybe. But since one is coming from the Central CA coastal area, anything beyond would probably become time-prohibitive.

Does it have to be the US? I know you want quick travel but that doesn't rule out Mexico and Canada (or even some Latin American destinations).
