Polimom Says

Living in the ‘burbs is hard for Polimom. The houses and neighborhoods look pretty much the same, the neighbors are so close you can hear them talking in their backyards, the restaurants are second-rate, and the main thoroughfares are lined with strip malls.

Harder still, my particular exurban exile is in the Gulf Coast region of Texas, where the topography begins and ends with… flat. Really flat. Like a pancake without syrup or butter. It’s enough to drive this Nature Girl bonkers.

Every evening, I think I’ll go shoot the sunset someplace — and each time, I wonder what I’ll add to the glorious Texas sky for a backdrop. Mount Levee? A bulldozer? Powerlines?

But last night, standing in my postage-stamp yard admiring the way the clouds were lit, I finally realized that I’m going to have to create my own beautiful scenery. So I climbed into a massive rosebush, and shot the sky:

No, it’s not a mountain, or an ocean, or a bridge or a harbor… or any other usual subject. But it’s in my backyard, and it’s beautiful. Even here.

I just have to remember to look for it.
