The mom ascendant

Posted on Friday 9 March 2007

For the next few days, the “poli” will be in abeyance as the “mom” takes Adorable Child to her first state-level swim meet.

I’ve promised to contain myself (as in… not cheer loudly, or stand so close that it’s obvious she has a mother, or commit any other embarassing transgressions…), and in return, she’s agreed to ride in the car with me.

So — y’all are on your own for the remainder of the weekend, ‘cuz I’m off to Austin.

(And since I’ve never been to Austin, please feel free to comment with suggestions for fun things to do in the evenings with a 10-year-old there. When I hit the inevitable brick boredom wall, I’ll call DH and get him to share your advice…)

Shameless stolen from TM’s recent “Good Times in Offbeat Austin” insert:

    1. Watch the bats at sunset at the Congress Avenue Bridge. Call the AA-S bat hotline at 512-416-5700 to get the best flight times.

    2. Amy’s Ice Cream, 1301 S. Congress Ave.

    3. Zilker Park & Botanical Garden, 512-477-8672.

And, unless you are a vegan, you gotta try Rudy’s - the “Worst BBQ in Texas”. I particularly like the sausage w/ jalapeno.

And… we’re back! Thanks for the suggestions very much, too. The meet ended up taking rather more of our time than one might have predicted, unfortunately — though we did find our way to some things. Looked for the bats, too, but it’s a little too early, apparently in the spring yet.

    Loved the hilliness of Austin!
