A window opens

Posted on Wednesday 17 January 2007

When I started Polimom Says in the summer of 2005, it was a diversion — a hobby with little purpose beyond personal gratification.

Mostly, it was because politics and current events were consuming so much mental energy that I’d found it difficult to not discuss them with my family, and they had grown very tired of listening to me.

Enter Polimom Says… and exit mom.

Actually, to say that mom exited is a bit of an overstatement. It wasn’t as if I abruptly left the family room and closed a door — or at least not right away. Initially, it was merely a small investment in time and energy, and I couldn’t have been less interested in who read it or what they thought.

Blogging Katrina changed everything, and it was in the weeks immediately following that terrible event that mom exited. Somehow, as hard as this is to understand (even for me), I managed to lose track of the door.

A year and a half later, I still haven’t found it — but a few weeks ago I successfully wedged my fingers into the cracks of a well-hidden window, and having opened it a bit, life has flooded back in. By any personal measure, this is a wonderful change… but it’s very bad for the blog.

So to those of you who have emailed — no, nothing’s wrong here. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. However, posting has been light and may continue that way for a while.

This post isn’t a good-bye, though. I still love this medium, the online community it gives access to, and Polimom’s readers in particular. Consider this a “light posting for quite a while” post… or maybe an “intermittent and unpredictable posting for the foreseeable future” post… or even a “no telling what Polimom’s likely to write about today” post.

Things are in flux here — so much so that although I’ve been trying to write this explanation for two weeks, I couldn’t find the mental focus.

Life kept getting in the way, and that’s a good thing.

That life getting in the way thing is very good to remember, and while I haven’t lost that old “a deadline a day” adrenaline as a newspaper guy turned blogger, I too have learned to have the good sense to not let blogging get in the way of things that matter much more.

It is difficult to blog. I tried it and couldn’t keep it up. I’ll still check in from time to time to see some posts. I enjoy your opinions but hey go be a Mom.

blueshead — how could I possibly forget!!???!!! I’m there — in spirit anyway. It’ll be much warmer in my den, and I can jump up and down and yell and scream and not worry about spilling my beer on anybody.
