I have many friends who are traditional conservatives, and who affiliate with the Republicans; they voted Democratic for precisely the reasons you say.

However, the Independents (including moderates who lean both directions) voted in massive numbers, and they rejected much more than that — which is why I firmly believe that there’s no free pass for a liberal agenda here, either.
