[...] The flap over Senator John Kerry’s statement in California (prior post here) has led to a number of things: howls of outrage, demands for apologies, and — at last — a hook, however late and tentative, on which Republicans can hang their attacks. That gaffe also pulled him off the campaign circuit, sending him home to(presumably) Massachusetts (WaPo): The White House and Republican allies orchestrated a cascade of denunciations throughout the day to keep the once and possibly future presidential candidate on the defensive and force other Democrats to distance themselves. Kerry canceled plans to appear with several candidates and returned home to avoid becoming “a distraction to these campaigns.” [...]

Polimom,

Nice collection of links on the Kerry meltdown. I also enjoyed the "Trick or Treat" theme in your post.

Not only was Kerry clumsy and inept in saying "it", his aggressive "in your face" response only made the whole thing last for more news cycles, though it seems to have gladdened the hearts of those who despaired of seeing a Democrat politician show some 'cojones'. We'll see whether Kerry has given the Republicans or the Democrats something to be 'thankful' for in a week or so.

Alas, his ignorant one-liner perpetuates false stereotypes about the US military, as marc's comment illustrates. The people who volunteer for the armed forces today are, on average, better educated, more capable, and more successful than the average of the US population.

In fact, the only groups that are significantly underrepresented in the US military are the uneducated and the poor, as some of the links you included point out.

Not only politically inept, but factually incorrect.

Sigh . . . .

Politically it was a bad turn of phrase, sure. But it was dead-bang-on, too. That's pretty much how I'm going to put it to my boys, when and if the time comes.

Why piss on the guy for saying it straight out? Collectively we ought to encourage politicians to tell the truth, from the heart, more often.

What is so ironic is that Kerry's original remark reminded me of the CW ('conventional wisdom') about Vietnam: if you were smart, you got an education (and a deferment) - otherwise, you went to 'Nam. And, of course, where was Mr. Kerry during that 'action'? Very proudly (at least during the 2004 campaign), he was in Vietnam, serving his country. What does that make him, eh?

Actually, it makes him a politician who was trying to be clever and get a "where's the beef?" type zinger in during the campaign, and ended up putting both feet in his mouth in a classical "I did not have sex with that woman..." gaffe - but without the sex.

At least, it shows that the Dems don't completely have their act together.

Don't know that it will make a whole lot of difference among the "undecideds", but it may help turn out some of the GOP's core support.
