Keep dreamin’

Posted on Thursday 21 September 2006

This story from the Houston Chronicle made me smile:

Wednesday was a day for celebration for Nghia Van Doan and his family.

First, the Vietnamese native was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. And, at the age of 100, federal officials said he is the oldest person in the Houston area to do so.

On top of that, his granddaughter gave birth to a boy, Tyler. He now has nine children, 114 grandchildren, 139 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Houston Chronicle

Doesn’t he look happy? I just love the Chronicle’s picture.

“We are glad that he’s still with us,” Mai said. “It’s just cute seeing a 100-year-old man passing a test and seeing the whole event. It’s just moving.”

It is cute. It’s also a truly profound example of how dreams can be realized, no matter how long it takes.

Now that he’s a U.S. citizen, he wants to exercise his right to vote, Mai said. She said he plans to go to the polls in November but hasn’t decided which candidates he will vote for.

“He’s going to vote for someone who has a good moral character,” Mai said.

Sigh…

Jess, I couldn’t agree with you more. The news is almost always so bad anymore.

I’m sure that’s why that story struck me so hard; people were happy!!! What a nice change.
