I don't know how long it took, but it appears that a fair number of Americans are now aware that the word "terrorist" has almost no meaning with respect to Iraq. We're engaging some two dozen different groups, some with overlapping agendas, some diametrically opposed. And the more you examine this tapestry of tribal feuds, grievances, power grabs, the more you start thinking that maybe we are the problem. To be sure, when the US civil war ended, there was no standing order to prosecute all Confederate soldiers, and in the same way there should be a blanket amnesty in Iraq that aims to defuse the violence and return citizens to more productive activities. It is always worth pointing out that "terrorist" is not a lifetime profession. It isn't even a hobby. A person can choose to be guerilla or not. Every person we can convince to take the "or not" option is one step closer to an exit with something decent salvaged. Right.
