Timing is everything

The Guardian Angels arrived in Houston yesterday, and the city delivered – in spades:

Minutes before the Guardian Angels arrived at Sharpstown Mall today, a brawl erupted near the entrance of the shopping center and a teenager pulled out a gun, firing three shots before fleeing the scene.

Lovely.

Sharpstown used to be an okay side of Houston. I lived there for a couple years in the early 1970s, and “hung out” at this very mall, but I sure wouldn’t do my shopping there these days. It’s going to hell over there.

Houston Police Chief Hurtt is not impressed that the Guardian Angels are coming to town, but I fail to see how this is a bad idea. It is WAY past time for people to take their neighborhoods back. Punks with guns should not own our streets, neighborhoods, or lives.

The Guardian Angels might not be a bad thing for New Orleans to think about, too. This is precisely the type of problem the Crescent City doesn’t want to have back, and right now – before incidents like Sunday’s second-line shootings start repeating themselves, is when New Orleanians need to claim their streets for the future. All the levees in the world won’t stop bullets.

It’s all in the timing…
